Band-edge exciton in quantum dots of semiconductors with a degenerate valence band: Dark and bright exciton states.

چکیده
We present a theoretical analysis of the band-edge exciton structure in nanometer-size crystallites of direct semiconductors with a cubic lattice structure or a hexagonal lattice structure which can be described within the framework of a quasicubic model. The lowest energy exciton, eightfold degenerate in spherically symmetric dots, is split into five levels by the crystal shape asymmetry, the intrinsic crystal field ~in hexagonal lattice structures!, and the electron-hole exchange interaction. Transition oscillator strengths and the size dependence of the splittings have been calculated. Two of the five states, including the ground state, are optically passive ~dark excitons!. The oscillator strengths of the other three levels ~bright excitons! depend strongly on crystal size, shape, and energy band parameters. The relative ordering of the energy levels is also heavily influenced by these parameters. The distance between the first optically active state and the optically forbidden ground exciton state increases with decreasing size, leading to an increase of the Stokes shift in the luminescence. Our results are in good agreement with the size dependence of Stokes shifts obtained in fluorescence line narrowing and photoluminescence experiments in CdSe nanocrystals. Mixing of the dark and bright excitons in an external magnetic field allows the direct optical recombination of the dark exciton ground state. The observed shortening of the luminescence decay time in CdSe nanoncrystals in a magnetic field is also in excellent agreement with the theory, giving further support to the validity of our model. @S0163-1829~96!05831-6#

Multiband theory of quantum-dot quantum wells: Dark excitons, bright excitons, and charge separation in heteronanostructures
Electron, hole, and exciton states of multishell CdS/HgS/CdS quantumdot quantum well nanocrystals are determined by use of a multiband theory that includes valence-band mixing, modeled with a 6-band Luttinger-Kohn Hamiltonian, and nonparabolicity of the conduction band. The multiband theory correctly describes the recently observed dark-exciton ground state and the lowest, optically active, bri...
متن کاملEnergy Levels of InGaAs/GaAs Quantum Dot Lasers with Different Sizes
In this paper, we have studied the strain, band-edge, and energy levels of cubic InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) surrounded by GaAs. It is shown that overall strain value is larger in InGaAs-GaAs interfaces, as well as in smaller QDs. Also, it is proved that conduction and valence band-edges and electron-hole levels are size dependent; larger QD sizes appeared to result in the lower recombination...
متن کاملTwo-Photon Absorption and Multi-Exciton Generation in Lead Salt Quantum Dots
Understanding the nonlinear optical processes in semiconductor nanostructures leads to possible applications in areas including laser amplifiers, optical switches, and solar cells. Here we present a study of the frequency degenerate twophoton absorption (2PA) spectrum of a series of PbS and PbSe quantum dots (QDs). The influence of the quantum confinement is analyzed using a four-band model whi...
متن کاملDetermination of the exciton binding energy in CdSe quantum dots.
The exciton binding energy (EBE) in CdSe quantum dots (QDs) has been determined using X-ray spectroscopy. Using X-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy, the conduction band (CB) and valence band (VB) edge shifts as a function of particle size have been determined and combined to obtain the true band gap of the QDs (i.e., without an exciton). These values can be compared to the excitonic...

1.1 Two-Dimensional exciton fine structure The spin properties of excitons in nanostructures are determined by their fine structure. Before analysing the exciton spin dynamics, we give first a brief description of the exciton states in quantum wells. We will mainly focus in this review on GaAs or InGaAs quantum well which are model systems. For more details, the reader is referred to the review...
